The ABCs of Dada

Every product of disgust capable of becoming a negation of the family is Dada;
a protest with the fists of its whole being engaged in destructive action: Dada;
knowledge of all the means rejected up until now by the shamefaced sex of comfortable compromise and good manners: Dada;
abolition of logic, which is the dance of those impotent to create: Dada;
of every social hierarchy and equation set up for the sake of values by our valets: Dada;
every object, all objects, sentiments, obscurities, apparitions and the precise clash of parallel lines are weapons for the fight: Dada;
abolition of memory: Dada;
abolition of archaeology: Dada;
abolition of prophets: Dada;
abolition of the future: Dada;
absolute and unquestionable faith in every god that is the immediate product of spontaneity: Dada.

Dada is without pretension, as life should be.

just an observation [a little upon titling]

While listening last night to Midnight Cowboys From Ipanema, by Sun City Girls, I read @ RYM one pretty much useless but nonetheless interesting observation referring to this record. “Anoter one of those albums that frighteningly does sound like their title.” Wow! It is some time I am into SCG and their out-of-this-world work and I have never realized how much I did enjoy their titles. It is really hard work to pinpoint, using a few [or not so few] words, creations of abstract / surreal / freaked-out nature that tend to defy any rational explanation and conventional classification. And there is always the prominent danger of skidding to over-pretentiousness, a case unfortunately concerning many artists [whether visual or sonic].

It is a certain thin line marking a circle of precise description. Bull’s eye title. There is even the possibility of title giving a whole new meaning or aspect to the work. Not guiding [bad word when paired with art] but giving a hint of what is going on in the artists mind, enabling the audience to reach a ‘higher [or deeper?] level of enjoyment’. Another band [this is a post limited to music] that comes in mind, when thinking of song and album titles, is Nurse With Wound. Just a look at vinyl etchings on run out grooves of NWW [and related] records and their song titles will reveal the magnificence of dada and the imposing beauty of absurd humor. The perfect company for their soundscapes. And don’t forget Zappa, Residents, Zorn, Acid Mothers Temple, Merzbow, Negativland, AMM, Smegma…..[the list goes on]. Indulge yourself with the great music of artists and bands who seem to have a Coll├Ęge de ‘pataphysique degree. Dig in if you dare.

Katsarida [Cockroach]

At last yesterday evening I went to Egnatia theatre for Katsarida [Cockroach] performance. Over-hyped play that pretty much stands up to its reputation. As minimal as it can get. Two actors and a ladder on an almost bare stage. Video projections are used to connect scenes and enhance some. A surrealistic tale with many references to dada, referred to elsewhere as ‘Absurd dadaistic [road] musical’, written and directed by Vasilis Maurogeorgiou. On stage the promising young actors Mihalis Oikonomou and Giorgos Papageorgiou. All in all Katsarida deserves your time and money.

P.S. this must have probably been a post written in Greek, English was finally used in the name of consistency, second thought was that merzbau is about everything but consistency but the post was already written

Understanding Duchamp [M.D. post #4]

Well better late than ever.

This must have probably been M.D. post #1 but given merzbau’s unpredictable evolution and by definition inconsistent nature [and of course the fact that it was much later than M.D. #1 discovered] it is now presented as M.D. post #4.

A beautiful flash ‘presentation’ which is charged with the difficult task of helping us Making Sense of Marcel Duchamp.

Can we call this a success? Well it’s your decision.

Duchamp's 'Readymades' [M.D. post #3]

“Apropos of ‘Readymades’ ”

In 1913 I had the happy idea to fasten a bicycle wheel to a kitchen stool and watch it turn.
A few months later I bought a cheap reproduction of a winter evening landscape, which I called “Pharmacy” after adding two small dots, one red and one yellow, in the horizon.
In New York in 1915 I bought at a hardware store a snow shovel on which I wrote “In advance of the broken arm.”
It was around that time that the word “Readymade” came to my mind to designate this form of manifestation.
A point that I want very much to establish is that the choice of these “Readymades” was never dictated by aesthetic delectation.
The choice was based on a reaction of visual indifference with at the same time a total absence of good or bad taste … in fact a complete anaesthesia.
One important characteristic was the short sentence which I occasionally inscribed on the “Readymade.”
That sentence instead of describing the object like a title was meant to carry the mind of the spectator towards other regions more verbal.
Sometimes I would add a graphic detail of presentation which, in order to satisfy my craving for alliterations, would be called “Readymade aided.”
At another time, wanting to expose the basic antinomy between art and “Readymades,” I imagined a “Reciprocal Readymade”: use a Rembrandt as an ironing board!
I realized very soon the danger of repeating indiscriminately this form of expression and decided to limit the production of “Readymades” to a small number yearly. I was aware at that time, that for the spectator even more for the artist, art is a habit forming drug and I wanted to protect my “Readymades” against such a contamination.
Another aspect of the “Readymade” is its lack of uniqueness… the replica of the “Readymade” delivering the same message, in fact nearly every one of the “Readymades” existing today is not an original in the conventional sense.
A final remark to this egomaniac’s discourse:
Since the tubes of paint used by an artist are manufactured and readymade products we must conclude that all the paintings in the world are “Readymades aided” and also works of assemblage.
